Finding Grants with Library Resources
hosted by John Van Dalen @ Main Branch Charleston County Library
John Van Dalen, reference librarian and Foundation Center database supervisor at the Charleston County Public Library, will give a brief overview of the Foundation Center print resources and the Foundation Center database. He will show how the databases can be effectively and efficiently used to search for grants and grantmakers. Search tips will be presented, including use of the subject, field of interest and keyword features. Special handouts and brochures will be available.

Bike Polo Tournament
Quick timed games (8 to 10 minutes) that will establish two final teams. Teams will go on to compete during half-time Saturday’s Lowcountry Highrollers Roller Derby Bout at McAlister Field House. Registration fees cover roller derby entry for all registered participants. Location for Bike Polo will be announced during dinner.

Speed Greeting at Theatre99
Strangers are just friends you haven’t made yet and with that in mind, we’re giving a game known as speed-dating our own twist. It’s not about dates, but about breaking through the awkward shy moments between strangers to make new friends. It will be a fun social experiment with a number of different ice-breaking games and a little social lubricant.

A Meeting About Meetings

Bike Maintenance 101

Learn about what makes a bike work. In addition to learning basic maintenance skills, there will be a strong focus on naming bike parts and learning key mechanical concepts so that you can go into any shop and describe your problem while avoiding the words “thingy” and “doohickey.” This is a great foundation for everyone interested in bicycles.

Bicycle Advocacy & Partnerships in Upstate SC

So You Want Bike to Work

Veteran and new bicycle commuters alike are encouraged to attend this session to share practical bicycle commuting advice. As a group discussion, we’ll cover common questions like what to wear each season, how to estimate travel times, how to ride safely in traffic, and then go on to identify safe routes to use and dangerous routes to avoid. We’ll also open up the floor to any other question pertaining to commuting by bike. Hopefully, we will establish a couple morning commute partners along the way, too!

Bike Polo Forum

Antique and Classic Bicycle Restoration and Maintenance

I have been restoring antique and classic American made bicycles from the 1890s to the 1950s for 8 years now. I specialize in the restoration and maintenance of both show and daily riding antique bicycles having about 15 in my current collection. I will describe the process of restoring a pre-1960 bicycle, the time and money involved, where to locate bikes, what kind of prices you might be expected to pay, and finding parts and then finally the restoration and maintenance. I plan on bringing my 1940 Columbia Deluxe, which I restored specifically for daily riding, to use as a prop during the seminar.

DIY Carbon Fiber Frames

History of the Bicycle and Its Impact on American Culture

Based on his graduate thesis research on Early 20th Century Transportation Technology, Frank will describe the history of the bicycle beginning with the invention and popularization of the Hobby Horse in the 1810s to 1820s, working through the design evolutions of the bicycle from the Boneshaker, the Highwheel and finally the Safety. In the mid-1890s the bicycle reached its final and current design phase which is what we have today. Frank will touch on the social, gender and transportation impacts to American culture and how the bicycle led to the creation of the motorcycle, automobile and even the airplane.

Blood, Sweat, and Fundraising: Special Events and You.

Chris was the producer of New Belgium Brewery’s Tour de Fat, a philanthropic traveling bicycle circus. Over the course of seven years, his team raised over $1 million dollars for both on and off road bicycle advocacy. He has had an opportunity to walk through the entire process of hosting a special event from start to finish numerous times in various cities. There are lots of tricks, and lots of pitfalls. Since 2009, we have been lucky to have him call Charleston home. Come listen to him talk about his experience, ask lots of questions, and leave with a game plan for your next event. He also likes long rides on the beach, sushi, hot-tubbing, and good beer.

Tall Bike Riding Lesson

Getting Your 501c3 On

Rebecca is the founder of three local non-profits that cover a lot of sustainable territory including building deconstruction (SC Sustainable Deconstruction), material warehousing (Sustainable Warehouse), and community gardens (Lowcountry Community Gardens). She is a great friend of the bike co-op and has donated the majority of materials that have been used in our shop. Her presentation will cover her personal experiences establishing her 501c3 status. She’ll share tips for your applications and then open the floor for discussion or Q&A.

Let Them Eat Skate Roller Derby @ McAlister Fieldhouse
Doors officially open at 5:00, but we’ll meet at Hampton Park Gazebo at 5:30 so we can roll in deep. Please try to be punctual arriving to the park so we can get a good count for the door when we arrive. Our two final bike polo teams will compete in a championship game at half-time.

Bike Ride to Beach
Led by Nora Cox. Meet at bottom of Ravenel Bridge.
The beach on Sullivan’s Island is only 10 miles away from Downtown Charleston. Nora will lead interested parties on the 30 minute ride to the beach where you’ll have time to dip your feet and soak up a little early morning sun before brunch.
